The Justice Department on Friday reached a settlement agreement in principle with the husband and estate of slain January 6 protester Ashli Babbitt, whose family had launched a $30 million wrongful death lawsuit accusing a Capitol police officer of intentionally murdering her.
“I can confirm for @JudicialWatch that a settlement has been agreed to in principle in the $30 million dollar wrongful death lawsuit we filed against the US Government filed on behalf of Ashli’s family,” Judicial Watch president Tom Fitton wrote on X Friday.
The lawsuit, filed by Judicial Watch on behalf of Ashli’s husband Aaron and her estate and green-lit by a judge last September, sought $30 million in damages for the “intentional shooting and killing of Ashli by Lt. Michael Byrd.”
A hearing had been scheduled for July 20, 2026; however, the newly reached settlement will likely resolve the matter before it heads to court.
“The facts speak truth,” Judicial Watch’s lawsuit stated.
“Ashli was ambushed when she was shot by Lt. Byrd. Multiple witnesses at the scene yelled, ‘you just murdered her,'” adding, “Lt. Byrd was never charged or otherwise punished or disciplined for Ashli’s homicide.”
In the years since Jan. 6, President Donald Trump has vehemently spoken out about Babbitt’s killing, supported her family, and called for justice in her death.
Ashlii Babbitt’s family held an event today on her birthday, and Trump actually sent them a video message. This .. is … unbelievable. “There was no reason Ashlii should have lost her life that day. We must all demand justice for Ashlii and her family.” pic.twitter.com/DpRMhkgCVa
