President Nayib Bukele has radically transformed his nation in just a few years, flipping El Salvador from being one of the most dangerous countries in the Western Hemisphere to one of the safest in the world.
Top investigative reporter and content creator Nick Shirley joined immigration news outlet Border Hawk for an interview at the White House following Bukele’s historic meeting with President Donald Trump on Monday.
“El Salvador is now safer than France. It’s safer than the United States, actually. There are no criminals on the streets, as far as dangerous gang members,” Shirley said.
Last year, Shirley was granted access to CECOT, a supermax prison in El Salvador holding murderous gangbangers and terrorists, some of whom have been delivered directly from the U.S. under a new agreement between the two countries.

I entered into El Salvadors mega prison know as The Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT), it is home to some of the most dangerous gangs and gangsters in the world. El Salvador was once controlled by these gangs and known as the most dangerous country… pic.twitter.com/0dK1HDDMHA
Shirley says there is a powerful sense of liberation and freedom among Salvadorans who no longer live in fear of the gangs who once controlled their streets and neighborhoods.
