White House chief of staff Susie Wiles was hacked by someone or a group of people who accessed her cellphone data and used the information to contact top politicians and American business executives, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.
The FBI launched an investigation into the matter this week, with the agency saying it does not believe a foreign nation was behind the operation.
Some of the individuals contacted by the hacker said artificial intelligence was used to impersonate Wiles’ voice.
However, the person or persons behind the scheme blew their cover by asking certain questions with answers the top Trump advisor would have already known.
A cash transfer was requested by the culprit at one point, and they also tried to obtain political information such as who might be on a list of potential presidential pardon candidates.
“The FBI takes all threats against the president, his staff, and our cybersecurity with the utmost seriousness,” FBI Director Kash Patel said in a statement. “Safeguarding our administration officials’ ability to securely communicate to accomplish the president’s mission is a top priority.”
“The White House takes the cybersecurity of all staff very seriously, and this matter continues to be investigated,” a White House official noted.
Current reports claim no sensitive information was delivered to the hackers.
