A Democrat rep from Maryland flew to the Central American nation of El Salvador Tuesday to meet with deported MS-13 gang member Kilmar Abrego Garcia — only to be turned away and denied access to him.
Footage Monday showed Rep. Glenn Ivey fuming outside the Centro Industrial prison in Santa Ana, El Salvador, furiously claiming he was being denied entry to the facility where Garcia was being held, despite being invited by the nation’s ambassador.
“I came all the way down from the United States after we contacted their ambassador, after we’d made formal request to our ambassador to the El Salvadoran government and we came here to visit him today and now they’re telling us we gotta go all the way back to San Salvador to get a permit,” a frustrated Ivey stated, adding, “That’s ridiculous.”
“We ought to have a chance to come in and visit,” insisted the Maryland Democrat. “They knew we were coming. They knew why we were coming and they know we have the right to do this.”
“So, they need to just cut the crap. Let us get in there and have a chance to see him and talk with him,” demanded Rep. Ivey, accompanied by Abrego Garcia’s lawyer and a trade union rep.
“Stop playing games. Let us have a chance to talk with him,” he added.
Rep. Ivey’s failed trip follows US Sen. Chris Van Hollen’s (D-Md.) visit to El Salvador last month to meet with the illegal alien deported by the Trump administration, where he was photographed sipping margaritas with accused wife-beater Abrego Garcia.
Van Hollen’s trip was widely ridiculed for some time, to the point that prominent Democrat Rep. Ilhan Omar (Minn.) told a journalist to “fuck off” when asked if other Dems should plan similar visits.
While courts have ordered the Trump administration to facilitate the deported illegal’s return, the White House has deferred to El Salvador’s authority to decide the fate of its citizen.
