The Trump Justice Department has reportedly opened an investigation into Democrat New York Attorney General Letitia James, following accusations she committed mortgage fraud.

The DOJ’s probe into James follows a criminal referral by U.S. Federal Housing Finance Agency Director William Pulte last month, alleging James appeared to have “falsified bank documents and property records to acquire government backed assistance…and more favorable loan terms,” The Guardian reported Thursday, based on anonymous sources.

“In what appears to be the early stages of the FBI criminal investigation, prosecutors have impaneled a federal grand jury to hear evidence in the eastern district of Virginia after the head of the federal housing agency, William Pulte, last month made the referral to the justice department, the people said,” wrote The Guardian.

“The investigation appears to be multipronged, the people said, with involvement from the FBI in New York in addition to Virginia.”

In his referral, Pulte noted James appeared to have allowed another person to designate one of her properties in Norfolk, Va., as her “principal residence,” in order to acquire more favorable loan terms than a “secondary residence” mortgage.

Additionally, Pulte alleged the NY AG appeared to have falsely claimed one of her homes in Brooklyn, New York, was a four-unit dwelling rather than a five-family structure, allegedly for the purpose of getting a better interest rate.

“Ms. James, for both properties listed above, appears to have falsified records in order to meet certain lending requirements and receive favorable loan terms,” Pulte wrote in his referral on April 14.

Responding to the referral, James’ lawyer Abbe Lowell dismissed the claims, writing, “Director Pulte cherry-picked an August 17, 2023 power of attorney that mistakenly stated the property to be Ms James’ principal residence…The broker understood this, and that Ms James was not a Virginia resident.”

The federal probe comes as James famously pursued a civil fraud case against Trump during the run-up to the 2024 election, winning a $454 million judgement against him for supposedly overvaluing his real estate, in a “rigged” case the president frequently criticized as “lawfare.”

In March 2020, James also bizarrely took action against Alex Jones, falsely claiming he had marketed colloidal silver as a COVID cure, thereby banning Infowars from selling colloidal silver products in New York State.

A man asked James about the investigations during an event Thursday:
