Vigilantes tracked down a man suspected of trying to rape a 70-year-old woman in New York City and beat him to a pulp before telling police they could find the alleged predator in hospital, according to reports.

The victim was attacked at approximately 1 p.m. on Friday in the Bronx by a suspect who “attempted to rape her,” NYPD explained in a statement.

NYPD released a photograph of the suspect as well as footage of him fleeing the scene with his pants off.

Less than 24 hours later, an anonymous caller alerted police that the suspect had been detained and thrashed so badly by local residents, he required hospitalization, NBC New York reports.

“I would have done the same thing because that could have been my grandmother, it could have been anybody. I would have done the same thing,” Stenller Contreras said.

“He deserved what he got. I’m sorry.”

Laurie Dominguez indicated that New Yorkers are fed up with the city’s catch-and-release treatment of dangerous criminals.

“It’s messed up because our government doesn’t really do much about it. They lock him up now and let him go later,” Dominguez told NBC.

Authorities say the suspect has been uncooperative in identifying his attackers as they investigate whether he is tied to other crimes in the area.
