A Salvadoran man who has lived illegally in the U.S. for nearly 15 years has been arrested for stabbing a man to death in Virginia last week, according to authorities.
The shocking incident unfolded on the night of March 27 in Warrenton, a town in Fauquier County.
A woman returned to her home just before 10 p.m. and found a stranger inside who was suffering from “traumatic lacerations” to the neck and other body parts, the Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office explained in a press release.
The injured man, 29-year-old Brandon Probst of Stuarts Draft, VA, succumbed to his wounds at a local hospital.
Probst and the homeowner, identified as Joette Breeden, did not know each other, authorities say.
Investigators believe the two men had been involved in an altercation outside Breeden’s home and that Probst made his way inside after being stabbed.
On Sunday, 27-year-old Jose Velasquez-Martinez was arrested at a hotel in Front Royal, VA, and charged with malicious wounding and murder.
Additionally, Immigration and Customs Enforcement has lodged a detainer against Velasquez-Martinez, a citizen of El Salvador who “illegally entered the United States on an unknown date in 2011, at an unknown location, and without being inspected, admitted, or paroled by a U.S. immigration official,” the agency told Fox 5.

The Salvadoran is being held at Fauquier County Adult Detention Center.
“I think there’s a lot of illegal immigrants here,” Breeden told Fox 5. “I think some are here honestly trying to make a better life for themselves, but unfortunately, among those there are people like this that we come across.”
