Home invaders made the mistake of breaking into a house in an upscale Los Angeles neighborhood where residents were prepared to defend themselves, according to reports.
The harrowing incident unfolded at around 10:30 p.m. on Thursday night in the Hollywood Hills.
A trio of suspects wearing masks and hoodies reportedly scaled a wall to gain entrance to the property before forcing their way through a door on an upper level.
The would-be thieves were apparently unaware that the homeowner’s family had just returned from an international vacation and was inside at the time.
Surveillance cameras captured the break-in and an ensuing confrontation that sent the suspects fleeing as a man appearing to have a pistol in hand can be seen standing near the breached door, possibly dialing 911.
The Los Angeles Police Department arrived minutes later and recovered a crowbar one of the suspects dropped during their escape.
“I felt very violated, and then after watching the footage and seeing it was three of them – I was more shook at the thought that if they came here when we weren’t here, and my 20-year-old daughter was here alone – that’s what shook me up the most,” a resident identified as Chantel told KTLA.
Chantel believes her boyfriend’s voice is what startled the marauders, as no shots were fired.
The residents say they had waited to post photographs from their trip until after they returned, but became targets anyway.
A sign reading, “This house is protected by God and a gun. Screw around and you’ll meet both,” reportedly hangs outside the home.
An investigation is ongoing.
