President Donald Trump will be signing an executive order Monday mandating American truckers to speak and read English before being allowed to drive in the country.
Breitbart News was the first to report on the impending executive action Monday, citing a White House document that states, “President Trump believes that English is a non-negotiable safety requirement for professional drivers, as they should be able to read and understand traffic signs, communicate with traffic safety officers, border patrol, agricultural checkpoints, and cargo weight-limit station personnel, and provide and receive feedback and directions in English.”
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy will oversee the implementation of the new guidance for truckers.
According to the document, a federal standard requiring commercial drivers to read and speak English was already on the books but “has not been enforced” until now.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt commented on the executive order during a Monday press briefing.
The Trump executive order signing, along with others, is expected to take place in the Oval Office at 5:00 p.m. ET on Monday.
