A Venezuelan gang member under a long-standing deportation order was arrested by federal authorities in the sanctuary city of Chicago this week, according to reports.
Pedro Colmenares, 33, is an illegal alien with a lengthy rap sheet that includes arrests for sexual assault, kidnapping, and domestic battery.
Additionally, he was investigated in connection with a murder in the Windy City last month but authorities in the sanctuary state opted not to press charges, citing insufficient evidence and “uncooperative witnesses,” Fox News reports.
Colmenares was first apprehended after illegally entering the U.S. at an undisclosed location in September of 2022.
Two months later, a federal immigration judge ordered him deported, but the Venezuelan appealed the ruling and made his way to Chicago in the meantime.
In February of 2024, Colmenares was reportedly arrested for driving without a license in an uninsured, unlicensed vehicle in Chicago.
Later in 2024, he was arrested on weapons charges. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) lodged a detainer against him, but Chicago authorities ignored the request and released the Venezuelan back to the streets.
On Feb. 17, 2025, Colmenares was arrested after a 25-year-old fellow illegal was shot dead at a residence in Chicago.
“Ultimately, Colmenares was not charged with that crime. While he was in custody, though, investigators learned that he was wanted for allegedly kidnapping his ex-girlfriend at gunpoint from outside the migrant shelter at 1308 North Elston on October 1,” CWB Chicago reports.
During the abduction, the Venezuelan reportedly told the victim, “get inside the car or I’ll shoot you,” before driving her to a home on the West Side of the city where he brutally beat and sexually assaulted her for days, according to prosecutors.
Incredibly, Colmenares was only charged with misdemeanor domestic battery and released on probation.
“The misdemeanor charges ultimately were dropped but the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office announced it found new evidence and a fresh warrant was approved,” Fox News reports.
Colmenares was reportedly arrested on Tuesday by ICE agents working alongside U.S. Marshals and Chicago police.
