Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) slammed Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Senate Democrats, criticizing them for wanting to work with Republicans on a Continuing Resolution (CR) spending package rather than allowing the government to shut down.
Speaking to reporters Thursday after Schumer indicated he wouldn’t back a filibuster of the Republican CR, AOC blasted him for cooperating with the GOP to keep the government open, which she says symbolizes Dems’ approval of the recent Trump-Musk spending cuts.
“I think there is a deep sense of outrage and betrayal, and this is not just about progressive
Democrats. This is across the board, the entire party,” AOC told MSNBC.

“Just to see Senate Democrats even consider acquiescing to Elon Musk, I think it is a huge slap in the face and I think that there is a wide sense of betrayal if things proceed as currently planned.”
The New York congresswoman went on to say the Democrat leadership’s decision on the CR is “crucial” because it could cause “an erosion of trust” between Senate and House Dems.
“We need to work together and as a team in order to usher our country through this very dark time,” she said.
AOC went on to say voting in favor of the GOP’s CR “codifies the chaos and the reckless cuts that Elon Musk has been pursuing.”
“The robbing of our federal government in order to finance tax cuts for billionaires is what is happening, and that is what Senate Democrats will be empowering if they vote for this CR.”
According to ABC News, AOC “avoided saying whether she’d primary Schumer next cycle even though it’s something some Democrats are privately urging her to do.”
Likewise, other Democrats, including House Minority Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (N.Y.), Rep. Nancy Pelosi (Calif.), and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (N.Y.), have similarly spoken out against signing on to the CR, with the latter reportedly heard screaming over Schumer’s decision inside a private Senate Democrat lunch meeting on Thursday.
AOC and other Dems’ hissy fit over Schumer’s desire to work across the aisle highlights a major schism in the party, as the radical anti-Trump left sows chaos while moderates recognize that allowing a government shutdown would be a political disaster.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump congratulated Schumer for coming to the table on the CR.
