President Donald Trump has already achieved his first victory in the ongoing trade war with Canada as Ontario Premier Doug Ford revealed he’s suspending the 25% tax on electricity exported to the U.S. just hours after POTUS hiked Canadian steel and aluminum tariffs.
Ford revealed he talked with United States Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick on Tuesday and that the pair had come to an agreement suspending the 25% surcharge on electricity sent to America.
“Secretary Lutnick agreed to officially meet with Premier Ford in Washington on Thursday, March 13 alongside the United States Trade Representative to discuss a renewed USMCA ahead of the April 2 reciprocal tariff deadline,” a press release explained.
Ford previously talked tough, threatening to “completely” shut off electricity to the U.S. if Trump escalated the trade war.
However, all it took was a strongly worded Truth Social post by Trump to get Ford to cave.
President Trump announced via Truth Social on Tuesday morning that he would be imposing an additional 25% tariff on Canadian steel and aluminum imports in response to Canada’s 25% tariff on electricity coming into the U.S.
POTUS also demanded, “Canada must immediately drop their Anti-American Farmer Tariff of 250% to 390% on various U.S. dairy products, which has long been considered outrageous. I will shortly be declaring a National Emergency on Electricity within the threatened area. This will allow the U.S to quickly do what has to be done to alleviate this abusive threat from Canada.”
Later in his message, Trump also called again for Canada to become the 51st state.
It looks like POTUS is getting his way so far amid the ongoing trade war with America’s northern neighbor.
