Workers started removing the massive “Black Lives Matter” painting in the middle of a street just a block away from the White House on Monday.

Last week, Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-Ga.) introduced legislation demanding Washington, D.C. either paint over the BLM street or lose federal funding and that “Black Lives Matter Plaza” be renamed Liberty Plaza.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser posted to 𝕏 last week, announcing the mural would be removed to avoid being “distracted by meaningless congressional interference.”

“The mural inspired millions of people and helped our city through a painful period, but now we can’t afford to be distracted by meaningless congressional interference. The devastating impacts of the federal job cuts must be our number one concern,” she wrote.
